The 9th Annual George McGovern Leadership in the Fight Against Hunger Award

Senator George McGovernWorld Food Program USA (WFP USA) will honor Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for her leadership in advancing the international community’s efforts to address global hunger at its 9th annual awards ceremony and reception on Tuesday, October 5. Secretary Clinton will accept the George McGovern Leadership Award, which recognizes policymakers and other leaders for their efforts to end global hunger.

Shortly after assuming her role as Secretary of State, Secretary Clinton established Feed the Future, a groundbreaking initiative to comprehensively address the full spectrum of hunger – urban and rural, chronic and acute – currently impacting over 1 billion people worldwide. Under her leadership, the United States is helping targeted countries develop hunger alleviation plans and has secured more than $22 billion in support from G8 members to assist this effort. During her career in the Senate, Secretary Clinton also played a leadership role in efforts to expand international school meals programs, cosponsoring legislation to increase funding for the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.

Former honorees include Senators George McGovern and Robert Dole (2002), Senator Dick Lugar and Odette Loan of Cote D’Ivoire (2003), Senator Dick Durbin and Paul Tergat of Kenya (2005), Senator Tom Harkin and International Paper (2007), Representatives Jim McGovern and JoAnne Emerson (2008), and Representative Rosa DeLauro (2009).
