Nutrition

Proper nutrition is critical to the health, productivity and well-being of all people. International nutrition programs help ensure that nutritionally vulnerable populations, particularly mothers, young children and those suffering from severe illnesses, have access to the required calories and nutrients needed to live healthy lives.
Providing assistance during early childhood is vital to long-term health. During pregnancy, the health and nutrition of a mother has a direct impact on her baby’s development. During the first two years of life, poor nutrition can cause irreversible physical and cognitive defects.
What is the U.S. government’s role? Through the Child Survival and Maternal Health Program , the U.S. government helps address the unique nutritional needs of mothers and young children in the developing world. As part of the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), the United States also helps meet the nutritional needs of HIV/AIDS patients who suffer from inadequate nutrition.
