Corporate Supporters

Corporate donations of cash, products or expertise can help leverage limited resources for long-term planning and capacity building to help WFP meet enormous challenges presented by disasters and global hunger. In turn, corporations engage their employees, customers and other stakeholders in a vital, life-saving mission. Donations from corporations have included frontline support of global disasters; expertise to enhance WFP's operational capabilities; and critical cash for development initiatives and capacity building which is not covered by government contributions.

Yum! Brands

In 2007, Yum! Brands—parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's and A&W All-American Food brands—launched the first "World Hunger Relief Campaign" to raise awareness and funds in support of WFP and other hunger relief initiatives.  Yum! Brands has long been committed to fighting hunger within the United States, and as the world's largest restaurant company with over 36,000 restaurants in 112 countries, expanding its work to the global sphere as a WFP Global Humanitarian Partner was a natural fit. The goal of the World Hunger Relief initiative is to raise global awareness on the issue of hunger, increasing volunteerism and encouraging donations to WFP and other hunger relief organizations. World Hunger Relief, held each year in October, engages 1.4 million employees and their families in a month-long global campaign. On average, nearly five million volunteer hours are donated to hunger charities, combined with in-store, consumer-driven fundraising, contributing a historic level of support to WFP's greatest needs operations. In addition, Yum! Brands is co-leading the Business Council to End Global Hunger, a coalition of trade associations, corporations and other private sector entities who will support the Roadmap to End Global Hunger, a comprehensive strategy for the U.S. government to effectively address global hunger. With the critical support of corporations like Yum! Brands, WFP can expand its life-saving work and bring hope to the millions of hungry poor it serves every day.

Key Partners

WFP USA partners with a number of generous corporations that contribute significantly to our mission to eradicate world hunger:

ACE Charitable Foundation

Celebrating 25 years of insuring progress, the ACE Group is one of the world’s leading providers of commercial property and casualty insurance and reinsurance. The ACE Charitable Foundation, part of the ACE Group, assists less fortunate individuals and communities around the world in achieving and sustaining healthy lives in geographic areas where ACE employees live and work. Through a combination of Foundation grants and employee volunteer initiatives, ACE focuses its support in the areas of education, the environment, and poverty and health. The Foundation is supporting World Food Program (WFP) operations in Indonesia through Food-for-Work/Food-for-Training programs, in which participants are paid in food in exchange for their work on activities that increase agricultural productivity, while imparting highly valuable agricultural skills. Thanks to the help of the ACE Charitable Foundation, these programs are helping beneficiaries not only recover from hunger, but create sustainable agriculture for the future.

Adobe Foundation

The Adobe Foundation, funded by Adobe Systems Inc., works to leverage human, technological and financial resources to drive social change and improve the communities in which employees live and work. The Adobe Foundation has contributed generous support to a number of WFP operations since 2004, including School Meals programs that work to increase school attendance in India, operations addressing undernutrition in Haiti, and agricultural and entrepreneurial training initiatives in Bangladesh. The Adobe Foundation also provided much-needed support to WFP’s emergency operation in Myanmar following the devastation of Cyclone Nargis, and to earthquake relief operations in Haiti. Additional funding for emergency operations around the world has assisted Haitians forced into critical food insecurity following skyrocketing food prices in 2008, as well as victims of widespread civil unrest in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Archer Daniels Midland

As one of the world’s largest agricultural processors, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) connects the harvest to the home, transforming crops into products that serve vital needs for food and energy.  ADM is committed to the responsible development of agriculture, and to helping improve the quality of life in communities throughout the world. ADM has been an integral supporter of WFP for more than a decade, providing food products for operations in North Korea, food products and funds for operations in Angola, and earthquake relief operations in Haiti. ADM has also consistently contributed to WFP’s School Meals program in Côte d’Ivoire, helping to significantly improve student nutritional intake throughout the country. Additionally, ADM has generously supported the annual WFP USA Leaders in the Fight Against Hunger awards ceremony, which recognizes individuals for their commitment to hunger issues. This awards ceremony plays an important role in recognizing the work being done to foster the public commitment and political leadership necessary to end world hunger.

Bloomberg L.P.

Bloomberg's philanthropy programs invest in health and wellness, improve the environment, support the arts and promote literacy around the globe.  Bloomberg is also at the frontlines when natural disasters strike. In keeping with this philanthropic mission, Bloomberg has helped WFP respond to several recent instances of critical food shortages and provide life-saving food and assistance in emergency situations. When Cyclone Nargis swept across Myanmar in May of 2008, Bloomberg funding helped ensure that WFP had the resources it needed as one of the first organizations to respond to the disaster. Six months later, a series of tropical storms threatened the livelihoods of thousands of Haitians already reeling from increases in food prices, and in January of 2010, a devastating earthquake shook the country. Bloomberg employees were moved to make personal donations to help the victims; Bloomberg generously matched each one of their donations. Thanks to Bloomberg's help, WFP was able to launch pre-positioned assistance and personnel to respond quickly and efficiently. Bloomberg also raises awareness on the issue of global hunger by marking World Food Day each October 16 by closing food courts across their offices worldwide and making a donation to food relief organizations, as well as organizing volunteer opportunities for employees. Bloomberg is the world’s most trusted source of information for businesses and professionals.  Bloomberg combines innovative technology with unmatched analytics, data, news, display and distribution capabilities, to deliver critical information via the BLOOMBERG PROFESSIONAL® service and multimedia platforms.

The Boeing Company

The application of Boeing’s strategic community investment focus areas—Education, Environment, Health and Human Services, Arts and Culture, and Civic Engagement—to the humanitarian sector have yielded a partnership with the World Food Program that seeks to address the long-term consequences of hunger and undernutrition in childhood..The program is designed to support mothers and their newborn children in Indonesia and the Philippines, reducing undernutrition among pregnant and lactating women and in children under five. This program provides supplemental nutrition for the short-term and nutritional training to help the community sustain better nutrition in the long-term. Boeing also stepped forward in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis, when WFP appealed to the international community for funding to implement emergency operations.

Cargill

Cargill, a Minnesota-based food company, helps customers succeed through collaboration and innovation, and is committed to applying its global knowledge and experience to help meet economic, environmental and social challenges wherever it does business. In collaboration with WFP, Cargill supports ‘Smart Schools Make Smart Kids,’ a program bringing education to thousands of children in Africa, Latin America and Asia. As a result of Cargill’s support, WFP has been able to provide nutritious meals to students in Nicaragua, Zambia, Malawi, and the Ivory Coast, and recently expanded Smart Schools Make Smart Kids to Indonesia. Cargill is thus helping to provide children with an essential meal, as well as an education and a chance at a brighter future. Cargill has also supported earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, and the WFP USA’s Annual Awards Ceremony and Summit on Global Hunger. Cargill is co-leading the Business Council to End Global Hunger as well, a coalition of trade associations, corporations and other private sector entities who will support the Roadmap to End Global Hunger, a comprehensive strategy for the U.S. government to effectively address global hunger.

Caterpillar Foundation

Since 2007, Caterpillar Inc., through the Caterpillar Foundation, has supported a range of WFP programs, from emergency operations to logistics, to school meals programs in some of the world’s poorest countries. This support reflects the Foundation’s breadth of philanthropic focus areas, which include education, health and human services, and civic, cultural, and environmental causes. In 2008, the Caterpillar Foundation generously helped to fund emergency operations following the cyclone in Myanmar through initiatives including an employee campaign resulting in substantial support for disaster recovery efforts. Additional support was given for emergency efforts in Haiti as a result of the food crisis. In addition to the Foundation's support, Caterpillar plays a major role in facilitating logistics in Chad, as part of a five-year commitment to assist WFP in purchasing, renting, and/or leasing heavy equipment required to implement programs around the world.

DSM

In 2007, DSM the global life sciences and material sciences company, and a world leader in nutrition, pharmaceuticals, performance materials and industrial chemicals announced the launch of an official partnership with WFP. This partnership was renewed in February 2010. For decades, DSM has engaged in a number of philanthropic initiatives aimed at introducing essential vitamins and nutrients into the diets of the hundreds of millions of people facing a crisis of micronutrient deficiency in the developing world. The company now also serves a vital role as one of WFPs Global Humanitarian Partners. DSM added to its arsenal support for the World Food Program’s greatest needs, matching technical and scientific expertise with high-nutrient products and financial assistance to help improve the essential micronutrients in the WFP food basket. DSM thus impacts WFP operations around the world, improving the nutritional value of food to ensure that the hungry poor receive the best nutrition possible. With the additional support of employee fundraising initiatives, government and stakeholder engagement, and a core belief that business cannot survive in a society that fails, DSM has become one of WFP’s most active and committed supporters.

Goldman, Sachs & Co.

Goldman, Sachs & Co. has committed to initiatives addressing social, environmental and economic needs worldwide as part of its responsibility to the communities in which employees work and live. In May of 2008, Cyclone Nargis left millions of people in Myanmar without food, clean water, or shelter, and stripped them of their food stores and livelihoods. With the help of Goldman, Sachs & Co., 2.3 million Burmese were assisted and WFP oversaw the reemergence of vital community structures such as roads, reservoirs and farmland, essential to the viability of future relief and rehabilitation efforts. WFP emergency operations thus sought to not only provide immediate assistance in the aftermath of the cyclone, but also help rebuild community assets and sustainable sources of income and food security. The nutritional needs of vulnerable groups were addressed, as was the need for infrastructure rehabilitation. Similar efforts are underway in Haiti with the help of Goldman, Sachs & Co., following the devastating earthquake.

Heinz

Heinz established the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation to promote the health and nutritional needs of children and families around the world. Heinz is helping the World Food Program do just that by facilitating Nutritional Mapping in Bangladesh, which identifies the most food-insecure populations and lays the foundation to formulate strategies to improve their access to food and improve nutritional intake. Mapping reveals not only how much food is needed, but also how factors such as the local climate, government, disease and sanitation affect food access. It helps to identify what foods are nutritionally appropriate, what the population is accustomed to, and what foods are available in the long-term. These preliminary steps help the World food Program formulate the best strategies to tackle hunger and undernutrition, building healthier, more productive and self-reliant societies from the ground up. Heinz is also helping WFP assist the people of Haiti following the terrible earthquake in January, 2010.

Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation

Hewlett-Packard focuses its global citizenship efforts in five areas: ethics and compliance; human rights and labor practices; environmental sustainability; and privacy and social investment. In partnership with the World Food Program, Hewlett-Packard has addressed a number of these goals. When Cyclone Nargis hit the coast of Myanmar in May of 2008, creating widespread devastation, WFP began distributing food in the regions that were hit hardest and launched plans to airlift food and supplies to cut-off coastal areas. Within days, the Hewlett-Packard Company Foundation stepped forward to help WFP provide life-saving food assistance to a population that had lost nearly everything. Hewlett-Packard’s grant provided life-saving food assistance to thousands of people with nowhere else to turn to recover from this disaster and begin rebuilding their lives in a sustainable manner.

International Paper

International Paper is a global paper and packaging company dedicated to making people's lives better. With a long history of supporting charitable endeavors in the communities where employees live and work, in 2004 the company launched its global signature giving program--Coins 4 Kids. In partnership with the World Food Program, Coins 4 Kids provides nutritious school meals for school age children throughout poverty-stricken areas near Nairobi, Kenya. In these areas, more than 25 percent of the population suffers from AIDS, and there are nearly 100,000 orphans. Without the critical support of International Paper donations, many of these children would go for days with little or no food. Since its launch, Coins 4 Kids has been embraced by International Paper employees around the globe. Through Foundation grants, company donations and an employee-based giving program, Coins 4 Kids has provided millions of meals and hope to thousands of Kenyan school-children.

Kraft Foods

As one of the world’s largest food companies, Kraft Foods is committed to combating hunger and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Since 2005, they helped the World Food Program bring nutritious meals—and the opportunity to gain an education—to school children. To date, thousands of children have been better prepared to learn through Kraft Foods sponsored feeding programs in Côte d’Ivoire, Honduras and Ethiopia. And to provide more sustainable food options in Ethiopia, Kraft Foods supported the MERET program, which teaches sustainable land use among farmers to create long-term solutions to food insecurity. Kraft Foods is also prepared to respond when disaster strikes.  They’ve supported WFP humanitarian response efforts in many countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Haiti. Most recently, Kraft Foods and its foundation joined an innovative 5-year effort to speed the eradication of hunger and malnutrition in Indonesia and Bangladesh.  This effort, called Project Laser Beam hopes to provide a sustainable, scalable, replicable model for future public/private partnerships to end hunger and malnutrition around the world.

Monsanto Company

Monsanto is committed to helping farmers around the world grow crops sustainably, creating a better future for people, the environment, and local communities. Monsanto contributed to WFP operations in Malawi in 2005, when flooding followed by droughts resulted in critical crop failure and widespread food insecurity. WFP relief operations helped to rebuild the infrastructure and resources necessary for farmers to reestablish their crop yields and protect them in the long-term. In addition, Monsanto has been a consistent signature sponsor of the annual WFP USA awards ceremony, the George McGovern Leadership Award: United to End Hunger, which recognizes individuals for their commitment to hunger issues. This ceremony plays an important role in recognizing the work being done to foster the public commitment and political leadership necessary to end world hunger.

PepsiCo, Inc.

The PepsiCo Foundation—the philanthropic anchor of PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies—has made a generous multi-year commitment to share PepsiCo’s considerable logistics experience and expertise to improve and streamline operations in the humanitarian sector. The PepsiCo Foundation is committed to developing sustainable partnerships and programs in underserved regions that provide opportunities for improved health, environment, and inclusion. PepsiCo and WFP’s collaborative project is utilizing global logistics experts from PepsiCo to help strengthen WFP’s response to growing hunger needs brought on by high food prices and the financial crisis, as well as emergency operations which Pepsi generously supports, such as earthquake relief in Haiti. It is also improving WFP’s operating efficiency and response time in crisis situations. WFP staff and PepsiCo logistics experts, including PepsiCo retirees who are part of the PepsiCo Foundation Service Corps, will share best practices, collaboration tools, performance dashboards and training frameworks to improve food delivery to the hungry poor. PepsiCo’s generations of experience will thus be re-applied to meet the needs of the disadvantaged communities WFP serves.

TNT USA, Inc.

International shipping company TNT has been a Global Humanitarian Partner of the World Food Program since 2002. TNT is committed to helping secure the long-term future of vulnerable communities by assisting them in a responsible and sustainable way. To date, TNT has supported WFP through 30 emergencies, including ten emergency airlifts; trained more than one thousand WFP staff; and funded millions of school meals. TNT has long been one of WFP’s most committed supporters, and offers four forms of support to WFP: knowledge transfer, hands-on support, awareness and fundraising, and transport of goods. TNT is committed to its role in raising awareness and funds for the fight against hunger, doing so through a range of activities including high-profile public employee events such as Walk the World and Color the World, cause-related marketing campaigns, and fundraising among suppliers and customers.

Unilever

Unilever is one of WFP’s Global Humanitarian Partners and, in collaboration with its employees and consumers, works to raise awareness, support and funds for WFP through a variety of initiatives. This is in keeping with Unilever’s vision—to create a better future every day—which unites Unilever’s business and brings together its portfolio, partnerships and people. Unilever’s partnership with WFP, ‘Together for Child Vitality,’ aims at improving the nutrition and health of poor school-aged children through WFP School Meals programs. The first countries to benefit from this partnership were Kenya, Indonesia, Ghana and Colombia in 2007, followed by Pakistan and the Philippines in 2008. In addition, Unilever is providing expertise toward the development and implementation of nutrition, hygiene and health education campaigns in Indonesia, Kenya and Colombia. Unilever employees also mark World Food Day each October 16th in their US offices, using the day to raise awareness on the issue of global hunger, and is supporting WFP’s earthquake relief operations in Haiti.

Western Union

Through the donations of The Western Union Company, its employees and Agents, the Western Union Foundation helps to fund programs that create economic opportunity around the world. Western Union has helped the World Food Program to respond quickly and effectively to a number of disasters in several of the world’s poorest countries. In the fall of 2007, widespread flooding threatened the lives and livelihoods of over a million people across northern Africa, from Mauritania in the west to Kenya in the east. In 2008 the people of Haiti were devastated first by skyrocketing food prices and subsequently by four tropical storms that swept the country in quick succession. In 2009, widespread flooding inundated Burkina Faso, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Thanks in part to Western Union’s support of WFP emergency operations, life-saving food assistance was able to reach the victims of these natural disasters facing critical food insecurity and with nowhere else to turn.
