“We are donating these items in preparation for the gradual handover of the school meals program to the Ministry of Education,” said WFP Liberia Country Director Getachew Diriba at the handover ceremony held at the Ministry and attended by Minister of Education Othelo Gongar.

MONROVIA -- The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) today donated cars, motorbikes, computers and other office equipment to the Ministry of Education to strengthen the development of its school meals program.

The donation includes 3 cars, 30 motorbikes, 9 desks, 9 chairs, 9 cabinets, 10 computers, 10 printers and 10 battery backups with an estimated value of US$140,000.

The items will be used by the Ministry of Education’s newly formed Monitoring and Evaluation Unit in the School Feeding Division to enhance their reporting and accountability.

“This equipment will strengthen the capacity of the Ministry, a crucial step in this period of transition,” said Director Diriba.

WFP’s school meals program supports the Liberian government’s priority to provide free and compulsory education by targeting food-insecure areas with low school enrolment and high drop-out rates, especially among girls.

The project currently provides nutritious daily cooked meals to 320,000 primary schoolchildren and take-home rations to 9,000 girls in grades 4 to 6.
